My Pet Squirrel - Peanut
In August of 2009, my wife found a baby squirrel who had fallen out of a tree. I was recovering from foot surgery and was off work at the same time. We nursed it back to health and raised it in our home. The Squirrel and I became real good friends. As I recovered from my foot surgery I went back to work and he would sleep in my pocket and would come out to eat play and then return to my pocket to sleep some more. As time went on he would visit the other workers but would alway return to my shoulder and then back into my pocket.
When it was 3 months we started to set his cage under our tree and he slowly started to roam in our backyard. I built it a tree house and over time he started to sleep in his tree house. He would come an go but we remained friend and he trusted My family and I and he even played with our Cat and Dog. Family and friends would bring their recorders and their kids and would come to play with the squirrel and he loved the attention.
If we called him by name he would always come to us and play. I would always go out in the morning and he would meet me on the lowest branch of our tree, jump to my shoulder and he would tickle ear. I would say goodbye and he would take off to the neighbors Peacan tree for the day and play with the other squirrels. At night I would go to the alley and he would jump to my shoulder and I would bring him back to the tree where his treehouse was located. He would eat, drink, and play until he was tired then he would go into house and block the door with a towel that I had placed in his house.
Peanut is no longer with us but he will always be in my heart. Since peanuts death we have had friend bring us more baby squirrels that they have found, but most of them had internal injuries and didn't live more than a couple of days. It takes a lot of time an energy to raise a baby squirrel but it was worth every moment.
